We have all known the feeling of sitting down in front of the TV waiting for the show to start. But before long we can’t take anymore of the bad plot, unrealistic events, confusing dialog and bad direction. So take the plunge and write an award winning script by yourself, sure this is a big task that requires a lot of thought and work. But if you arm yourself first with the ultimate script writing guide you will have no troubles. So I’m going to give you some hot tips on how to write TV script successfully.

TV Script Format

• A very large percentage of writing is actually what not to write, in 90% in fact
• Keep it clean and simple, avoid too much filler.
• Find your centres of action? In writing TV script don’t focus on a whole group of people, this becomes very confusing.
• Centers of action, have only 2 or 3. This keeps the TV script simple.

Plot Characters

• Are they larger than life yet still recognisably from life?
• Cliches or Archetypes?
• Reveal your characters and their story through the action as well as through the dialogue

Script Plot

• What keeps you hooked in to a show? What makes you lose interest?
• Open the show as dynamically as you can, too long a build up will cause viewer to switch off. Get the viewer hooked ASAP and they will stay tuned to the finish.
• Too much narration can bog the show down; remember the TV remote off button is only a finger tip away.
• Is there enough action, drama, or comedy?
• Keep a strong sense of character; this will carry the audience to the end.

These are just a small portion of the vital tips and tricks of that you will need to succeed in this area, there are many people who try and give up because they approach writing TV script in the wrong way. Don’t be one of those people.

I’d been an actor, I know when you walk on the stage it’s a
different animal every night really, and they require different
things: sometimes that audience is slow, sometimes it’s ahead of
you, you know, and sometimes it’s very, very lazy and you’ve got to
work your butt off to get them to take an interest.

Again, as for the writer, the writer has to be thinking all the
time that I’ve got to keep this audience interested. I can’t go off
into great long rants because the audience will get bored I ‘ll tell
you something about the theatre, you ‘ve got about 10 minutes to hook
the audience, which is a bonus because, if you write for television,
you’ve got about 10 seconds sometimes to get the audience interested,
but any audience will give any play 10 minutes and they’ll watch it
and if they are interested, they’ll stay and they’ll listen.

If they are not interested or you haven’t hooked them, or you
haven’t explained what you want to do or you haven’t set what sort
of play it is, and created the interest in the characters. You
start to hear, clearing of a throat, a cough here and there, then
it goes on, then the shuffling of feet and you go on and you’ve
lost them.

The discussion was about a writer friend who was stuck because the publishers felt that his characters lacked ‘depth’

So I said to him, What about interviewing your characters?” And he
said, “Huh?” I said, “Look, you get a piece of paper

, you sit down
and then you write questions as if you are interviewing your
character.

You ask them about what is their most happy childhood moment? What
is their worst childhood moment? What are their politics? What was
their first love affair? How do they think about the future of
nuclear disarmament?

You ask them anything.

You will keep at it and you’ve got to keep going until you
hit the wall really. Then leave it and come back and then ask them
a few more questions.

I guarantee you, you will really TALK about the man and the women
who are the main characters. I guarantee you, spend a whole
day on it if necessary because it is very important and I guarantee,
when you come back to it, you will find that those characters are
richer and you know them in a way that you didn’t know them before.

He said, “I’m flabbergasted.” He said, “That’s great.” He said,
“Oh, wow. I can’t believe it. I can’t wait to get to it.” We were
talking late at night. “I can’t wait till tomorrow when I can get
on with this and talk about it.”

I thought, “That is absolutely remarkable because this guy is
creating a best seller. It is a major American literary agency and
a simple thing like that could literally put the book on the best
seller list.”
